Traditional Medicine Terms

Many terms used to help understand the meaning of the treatment methods in Iranian traditional medicine. In the following, we describe the useful words that everyone who wants to know a little about traditional medicine needs them.

Blood

Blood is a red, warm, and moist liquid that is responsible for feeding the organs. The normal blood is red, sweet and odorless and has a warm temper. The blood that flows from liver to the heart contains black bile, yellow bile and phlegm. This is the cause of that’s concentration. But on its own way, it loses some of the excess humours and water, and becomes more red, smooth, and bright.


Black Bile

It’s black, produced in the liver and its main position is the spleen. Black bile has a cold and dry temper just like earth and an acerb and bitter taste. A portion of black bile is compounding with blood to feed bones. The other part goes to the spleen and improve the gastric mucosa.


Yellow Bile

A yellow and bitter liquid that has a warm and dry temper. Its produce in liver and place in Gallbladder. The natural yellow bile is red. The bile grazes the blood lead to pass through narrow channels and capillaries. Yellow bile can help inhale and exhale and excretion.



Phlegm

It is produced in the stomach and participate in blood circulation. Phlegm taste sweet and it has a cold and moist temper. The phlegm turns into blood in its natural process.



Warm Temprament

These people get nervous simply and always feel warm. The number of these people is lower than those who have cold temper. Cold diet is recommended to these people.


Cold Temprament

Often, white people that coldness stays in their bodies for a long time. They often like to sleep, nothing can make them nervous, and their blood acidity is high. Warm diet is recommended to these people.

  • Black bile Temperament: Cool and dry temperaments associated with Suda production in the Spleen.
  • Phlegm Temperament: Cool and moist temperaments associated with the lymph system or the immune system.
  • Blood Temperament: The Warm and moist temperament related to the feeding cells by nutrition and oxygen.
  • Yellow bile Temperament: Warm and dry temperament associated with yellow discharge from liver.
  • Moderate Temperament: It is the balance between cold, warm, moist, and dry temperament. A balance diet can lead to moderate temperament.

Dry or suction Cupping

It is a kind of cupping that don’t need any blood extraction. This will be performed through a sucking action on the skin. Dry cupping has two types include cold and dry and hot and dry.


Wet Cupping

This method includes blood extraction from the patient. The most common type is extracting blood between scapulaes.


Tight Bloodletting

It is performed through a syringe and a little blood is released. It can be done in children, old and weak people, and repeatedly in normal people by observing the essential points.



Wide bloodletting

Unlike the cupping that blood extract from the capillary, in wide bloodletting, one of the major vessels is cut using a small metal blade. Bloodletting is a method for balancing the body's four humours. It is recommended in the spring and for adults with warm temper.



Humours

Sum of humour that contains yellow bile, black bile, phlegm and blood. Each homours has its own temperaments.
